Preparedness
In addition, the command trains for and executes GaSDF-common missions
including Search and Rescue, Disaster Recon, Shelter Augmentation, and
Traffic Control.
Area of Operations
Unlike GaSDF field brigades, which have geographically assigned Areas of
Operations (AO’s), SUPCOM’s AO is the entire State.
Motto
SUPCOM’s motto, POINT OF THE BAYONET, was bestowed by our former Commanding General, BG Mike McGuinn.
It reflects SUPCOM's leadership in being "out front" in integration with our National Guard partners and customers. With it we also honor BG McGuinn's service in the US Army's 7th Infantry Division, "The Bayonet".
Insignia
SUPCOM’s Distinctive Unit Insignia, or DUI, is a party
per chevron shield, in "classic" shape, signifying our strength and
force protection capability; the chevron is also the classical symbol of
the builder, denoting our engineer detachment.
The colors of the shield are gules (red) and earth,
historically used to indicate military strength, courage, and sacrifice.
Supporting the shield is the insignia of the Georgia
State Defense Force, a saber and musket placed saltirewise, i.e., in
the form of the Cross of St. Andrew,
indicative of resolution.
The twin towers embattled (crenellated) signify
engineering services and support.
The upraised argent and sable (silver and black)
knife, point uppermost, denotes military honor and justice.
An eagle or displayed (golden, with spread wings)
surmounts the shield, and signifies strength, honor and high achievement.
The eagle's wing position is also the sign of protection.
On its chest is an escutcheon gules (smaller
shield in red), with an arch supported by three swords. This device, which
appears on the shoulder patches worn by all GaSDF soldiers, is derived from
the arch and columns device of the Great Seal of the State of Georgia.
The escroll or (golden scroll) beneath the shield
displays the command’s motto and in its center, showcases SUPCOM’s core
mission: SUPPORT for our sister units in the Georgia Department of
Defense.
SUPCOM’s DUI was designed by CW2 Tim Wimberley of the
IT Detachment.
